Play Ball - Baseball Season & Blankets

March 31st, 2010

Spring is here, which makes me very, very happy for a couple of reasons.  First, the warm weather and sunshine is such a relief after a cold, dead winter.  We live in the Ohio river valley and though it’s given me allergies I’ve never had before, I’ll take spring when I can get it.  Next, Easter is around the corner.  Let’s just say I love, love, love Easter.  So, what else comes with Spring?  Why, baseball season of course!

Ah, the crack of the bat, the green grass, the pop of a mit and the smell of hot dogs are all very welcome.  Baseball is by far my favorite sport, and I have transitioned from a Detroit Tigers to a Cincinnati Reds fan.  I have to say, look out Cardinals.  We’re gunning for you this year.  We have a lot of young talent, and a lot of strong arms.  There will be Aroldis Chapman Mania in Cincinnati and among the MLB this year.  Mark my words.  Ok, well I could talk about Chapman, Votto, Bruce, Phillips, Bailey and the rest all day, but I’ll move on.  To what?  Baby blankets of course!  We have several MLB baseball blankets for you to choose from, which are adorable.

How To Unclog A Toilet

March 28th, 2010

(Easy answer.  Click here.  Funny story, read on.)

“So, how did you spend your Sunday evening, Eric?”  Well, let me tell you.  I was just about to sit down to a tasty dinner of left over grilled chicken and shish kabob over rice, when I was faced with the daunting task of unclogging a toilet.  It was a task that had been lingering since earlier in the day, but I had left it be in hopes that it would “soften” or take care of itself.  No such luck.  Unfortunately for me, one of my good buddies left this present earlier in the afternoon, and then he was off.

Look, I realize that this has absolutely nothing to do with baby blankets.  And that’s ok.  This is life.  And poop is a part of life.  So, if you don’t want to read about poop, that’s fine.  Go visit our store instead!  (shameless plug).

So after a good deal of plunging and not getting anywhere, I had to think outside of the box.  We don’t have a snake.  We didn’t have any drano.  So, what’s a man to do?  Well, using my caveman like ingenuity, I thought, “Why not try the shopvac?”  I can just suck the poop right out.  Right?  Wrong!  Horrible idea.  What I realized while plunging was that I was not getting a good seal with the plunger.  When I sucked out all the poopy water with a shop vac, I tried plunging a few more times.  I wasn’t getting anything and realized that if I had a bad seal before with the plunger, it was even worse now.  I needed more water.  So, I flushed again and the water rose again.  The only good out of using the shop vac was at least I had cleaner water to plunge with now.  “Clean” is a very liquid idea at the moment, as my good friend Kat would quote Hitch would say.

So, next step.  Man Ingenuity Activate!  Go to the internet, stupid.  I went to Drano’s site - expensive and nothing really for a clogged toilet.  Then, I saw someone on a forum mention the “dish soap” method.  Huh?  New Google search.  After a bit of hunting, I found this video on How to Unclog a Toilet with Dish Soap and Hot Water.  Excellent presentation.  Funny video, but will it work.  I went downstairs, and fired up my teapot.  I reshopvacced to get all the water out of the toilet, gave a good squeeze of dish soap, and waited for my water to boil.  A few minutes later, I poured it in and crossed my fingers.

Now, the idea behind this is pretty simple.  Lubricate that poop and get it out.  The hot water I think may expand the pipe just enough to get some soap around it.  After ten minutes of waiting, I came to a commode that still looked clogged, but was much nicer smelling.  I gave it a flush….but no such luck.  Disappointed, I started plunging again.

You know when you are plunging how your heart is not really in it?  You’re just kind of moaning about having to plunge and getting poopy water splashed up on you.  That’s where I was, although, it was kind of soapy, poopy water.  Then, you realize that your heart is not in it, so you decide to risk the splashing and give it a few good plunge strokes.  Well…I did..and VOILA!!!!!  I saw water going down and heard that wonderful gurgling noise.  HOOOOORRRRRAAAYYYYY!  I freaking love the internet.  I feel like a freaking man for fixing things.  I still have poopy water on me, but I am much happier!!!

So, there is my story.  I had to clean up the shop vac (dry heaved a few times), and then I thought I’d share with the world.  Pardon my grammar.  It’s late.  Again, this has nothing to do with babies, but if you have kids and babies around the house, the last thing you need is a clogged toilet.  Do yourself a favor.  Watch the video.  Use dish soap and hot water.  Save $30 and a plumber call, etc.  Be happy.  The End.

Angel Dear Blankies - Hot Items

March 24th, 2010

For a the past several months, our customers have fallen in love with aden and anais blankets.  They have a good reason!  Aden and anais has created an excellent quality blanket made of muslin cotton that is useful in so many ways.  First, it’s wonderful for swaddling a newborn.  With a large size of 47 x 47, it is simple to get that tight wrap around your baby.  Plus, the blankets are breathable.  This means that your baby won’t overheat and wake up in the night.  Another huge plus.  Besides swaddling, these are great blankets to play on and use for a walk in the stroller.  On top of all of this, we are striving to provide the best price on the internet for these blankets.  And with flat rate shipping, you save by buying a few packs (which you can give as gifts!)  While some people don’t like having to buy the entire 4 pack, we’ve received feedback of a creative idea.  If you need to, break down the 4 pack into groups of 2’s or individually give them as gifts.

While aden and anais continue to be top sellers, our new Angel Dear blankies are going fast!  If you haven’t noticed yet, these animal blankets are absolutely adorable.  They serve as a different function then aden and anais.  They are not swaddle blankets.  They are fun security blankets that are super soft to the touch.  We offer them in all kinds of cute little animal heads: pink and blue bear, pink and blue lamb, green froggy, yellow ducky, sleepy owl, pink and brown giraffe, puppy, tiger and brown and pink monkey.  So fun!

Many mothers can’t buy just one of these because their children have fallen in love.  These blankets provide a best friend for your little one and can serve as a calming mechanism.  We offer them for only $11.94 a piece, and we are working to add personalization for these blankets.  Stay tuned!

Pregnancy Week 13

March 18th, 2010

My wife and I are 13 weeks into our first pregnancy.  For this entire first trimester, it has been a lot of nausea and even more fatigue.  As a husband, I have tried to make it as comfortable as possible for her.  As of now, she is working full time.  So, I can’t imagine how difficult it is to get up and go to work every morning while making a baby!  Crazy.  So, when she comes home every day, I’m trying to find out if she is more tired or more hungry.  If it’s tiredness, then go get your nap.  If it’s hunger, then I try to have dinner planned.  I’m working full time as well, but my hours can be more flexible, so I use that to our advantage.

Hopefully, the extreme tiredness and nausea will end soon.  She has show a few signs of it breaking, but we’re not out of the woods yet.  We’ve heard that the second trimester can bring some relief, and it can’t come soon enough.  Last week, we went out on a fun date.  I took her to Buca di Beppo’s for some yummy Italian, and then we went to the Cincinnati symphony.  However, with 3 acts in the evening, she could only make it through two.  So, it was off to home and the comfort of sleep.

Even with the difficulties that pregnancy has brought, the amount of joy has far outweighed the negatives.  We are thrilled at the opportunity to be parents!  Plus, we finally get to use some of these baby blankets for ourselves! :)

If you have any pregnancy advice for the weeks to come, let us know!

We’re Pregnant!!!

March 11th, 2010

If you haven’t heard the news yet, we are pregnant!!!  This is such a blessing because we had been trying to get pregnant since the fall of 2008.  It has been a journey of faith, and we feel God is blessing us tremendously by answering our prayers.

My wife told me the news on a night that I was leaving for a Chick Fil A opening in Nashville, TN.  While I was feverishly packing up, she asked me to come in our room for a second.  She gave me a card that said, “we’ll miss you while you are gone.”  My immediate thought was, “typo”.  And then it registered… “WE”???  “REALLY”??!!!!????!!!!  We hugged and laughed and cried together all at the same time.  It was a precious moment that I’ll never forget.

Then, I packed up my car and drove 4 hours away for 2 days, leaving my pregnant wife behind to go score some free chicken.  I know.  Crazy, right?  Because of some health complications she had as a child, my wife wanted to keep the news to ourselves until we were further along in the pregnancy.  But, we are now nearly 13 weeks and everything is going great!  We’re still praying for a healthy pregnancy and baby.

So, as I take care of my sleepy, nauseous wife, we are looking forward to the great adventure of parenting that lies in front of us.

Watch the video below to see our church’s reaction to telling the news (a few in the room knew already and several folks were absent for the big news, but still a lot of fun!).  Hooray!  In September, we’ll finally get to use some of these baby blankets!  :)

Pedigree Dogs Slow Motion Video - Outstanding!!!

March 5th, 2010

If you are a dog lover, you absolutely must watch this video!!!  What does this have to do with baby blankets you ask?  Well ….  you see … dogs and baby blankets go together …. like …. like ….  Oh, ok.  You got me.  There is no correlation between the two, but who cares?  There are some videos that are cute and then there are some videos that make you belly laugh out loud.  It’s Friday.  It’s time for a good belly laugh.

I have a golden retriever, and he’s one of my best buds in the world.  There is no doubt that he loyally loves me, but he also loves treats, like the dogs in this video.  Enjoy, and have a great weekend!
