Security Blankets – Friend or Foe?
There are certainly a number of different opinions out there about security blankets. Some parents will swear by them and say that a blanket becomes a comforting friend for their child. Other parents fear that a child may become too connected to a security blanket and will have a hard time weaning off. Both views are certainly possible. Here is an article from Science Daily that speaks a bit more about the pyschology of security blankets.
In our opinion, security blankets are a great item for babies (shameless plug), but just like anything else, they can become a problem. If a child finds comfort and avoidance from fear with a blanket friend, that can be a good thing. But as a parent, you need to monitor this closely and do a good job of parenting. A child can really get attached to anything and trust can be placed in the wrong object. It is the parents job, though a difficult one, to help train the child in where their real protection and trust comes from.
