Feeding your toddler can be such a challenge. Toddlers are very curious and are easily distracted. They are just starting to explore their surroundings and practice their independence over a lot of aspects. Food is one of the few things that they can choose independently, and they will try to use this power to their advantage. It is actually a good idea to let your kids choose what they want to eat.
Toddlers are opposing by nature. They will do the exact opposite of what you tell them to do. Forcing them to eat vegetables wont work. A diplomatic approach is a better idea. You can still let your child pick his own food without having to sacrifice nutrition. As parents, it is your job to present your toddler with healthy food choices. Getting your toddler to eat doesnt have to be a power struggle. You can get him to eat that bowl of green peas with a bit of craftiness and lots of patience.
A lot of parents would agree that their toddlers arent eating enough. A toddler would eat one decent meal, and would pick on his other meals for the rest of the day. Nonetheless, they never seem to go hungry or run out of energy. Refusing to give them snacks wont work either. Unfortunately, toddlers wont eat something unless they want to. A bowl of green peas is still a bowl of green peas, no matter how you serve it.
Amazingly, picky eaters manage to meet their energy requirements even with poor eating habits. Toddlers dont need as much energy as adults do. The reason why most parents feel that their toddlers arent eating enough is that they overestimate the portions that their kids should be eating. An average toddler only needs around 1,300 calories in a day. Of course, this would still depend on the childs activities.
You can get your toddler to eat during meals by serving right-sized portions. Cut regular servings in half or quarters. Ideally, your child should be able to consume at least a quarter of whatever you eat. Bread, fruit and eggs should be sliced in half before serving them to your toddler. Instead of serving him a whole bowl of cereal, try to give half-filled bowl instead. You can encourage him to try new kinds of food by offering a tablespoon first. Make sure he gets at least 2 tablespoons of vegetables in every meal.
Never bribe your child with candy or small toys, nor should you threaten him with punishment. Yummy dessert is something to look forward to after meal time. However, this tactic would only work temporarily. Offering dessert as a reward for eating vegetables makes it seem like sweet treats are more valuable than the actual meal.
Set a good example for your child. Let your toddler sit with you at the dinner table. Its good for a toddler to see his family eat a nutritious meal together. Educating your child about the benefits of healthy eating is important. Just make sure not to overdo it. Remember this the next time you catch yourself repeatedly praising your toddler for every bite of broccoli that he eats. This silly approach will probably make your toddler hate veggies even more.

I have a son! My wife, Witni, gave birth to our son at 2:13pm on September 8, 2010. The total delivery time from when her water broke at 5am on September 7th to when he was born was 33 hours. 33 hours of labor! My wife is a superwoman. And not only did she go through 33 hours of labor, but she delivered vaginally. Unbelievable. I was right there coaching her the whole way, and it must have been the hardest night of our life, but we were rewarded with our little boy! Emil Regan Sztanyo was 6 lbs and 13 oz when he was born. Emil (pronounced like Emmit) is after his great grandfather, a WWII veteran, Christian patriarch and humble man. He is almost 89 years old, and he played a round of golf with my brother last week. Regan means born into a royal family, which we believe he is born into THE Royal Family, those adopted by our Father.

Emil & Mom Seconds After Birth
What a joy and a blessing this little baby is to us. We had been praying for him to come for a long, long time. A few years ago, we were called out of a high school ministry, Young Life, and knew God was telling us to start this business and have a family. A year and a half after trying, we were pregnant with little Emil. And now, we know we are completely blessed by his arrival. God gave us this blessing, and helped us through the delivery. In fact, in those final hours of the night, as my wife was suffering through the pain and exhaustion, we prayed like we had never prayed before. We prayed for this baby to come, for the pain to cease, for the desire to push (we never got to 10 cms), for mercy and for deliverance. He heard or prayers. There were so many scriptures going through our minds, but none more prevalent than this one:
1 Unless the LORD builds the house,
its builders labor in vain.
Unless the LORD watches over the city,
the watchmen stand guard in vain.2 In vain you rise early
and stay up late,
toiling for food to eat—
for he grants sleep to those he loves.3 Sons are a heritage from the LORD,
children a reward from him.4 Like arrows in the hands of a warrior
are sons born in one’s youth.5 Blessed is the man
whose quiver is full of them.
They will not be put to shame
when they contend with their enemies in the gate.Psalms 127
The sex of our baby was a surprise to us, and when he finally did come, they asked me if I wanted to announced what he was. I was so overwhelmed with relief that it was over for Witni that I had completely forgotten we didn’t know what it was! So, I looked down at our baby, as he was laying on Witni’s chest, and emotionally blurted out, “it’s a boy!”. What a blessing!
I have so much to write that I think I could write a book. Emil is 4 days old today, and he is doing better each day. We are breast feeding, and after some help from a lactation expert at the hospital, little Emil has acquired the “taste”. He is eating better and better each day. He was a bit jaundiced, and we had to take him in for tests the past few days, but he didn’t have to go on the “billy” blanket. He got a little sun today, which I think he rather enjoyed. He has so many people who love him already that he doesn’t know how good he has it.
Ok, enough for now, I’ll be sure to write much more later. If you want to watch a bit more of the delivery (PG rated), here’s a video.

Family Photos
When you are at a friend’s house for the first time, one of the first things you always do is look at the family pictures. The hallways, staircases or fireplaces of family photos remind us of who we are and where we’ve been. Family photos tell a story that you may or may not get from your friends. They also can bring up fond memories.
There are a few characteristics that you can count on in a family photo – big hair, outdated fashion and baby blankets. It’s always fun to laugh at what we used to think was cool. ”Why did I part my hair down the middle?” ”Why did I ever let my wife talk me into getting a perm?” ”Is that a porn mustache?” Outrageous! But among the craziness, there are usually baby pictures – lots and lots of baby pictures. And what is the most common item in those pictures besides a smiling baby? Usually, a baby blanket! So think about it. If you’re giving a baby blanket as a gift, that gift may be plastered on a wall for 20, 30, or 40 years somewhere. Doesn’t that make you think twice before you buy a gift? Maybe you don’t think it’s a big deal. But if you don’t believe me, go check your wall of family photos right now. See if there isn’t a security blanket being held onto by one of your little ones.
