Security Blankets

Security Blankets are special because they provide comfort or security to babies. When a baby is out of the womb, it's a big and scary place to be. One of the best ways they find peace to stay calm is with a security blanket. The unique bond that is formed is like a friendship. The blanket can literally become a child's best friend.

The phrase "security blanket" was coined in Charles Schulz' Peanuts comic strip when Linus van Pelt was always seen holding on to his blanket. Another popular celebrity siting was the blankie know as "Wubby" in the movie Mr. Mom.

Research has proven several positive benefits of security blankets. Having a security blanket available can help children adapt to new situations, aid in their learning, and adjust to physicians' and clinical psychologists' evaluations. Research also points out that there is nothing abnormal about being attached to them. In the United States, about 60% of children have at least some attachment to a security object.
